NEW YORK, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks fell in volatile trading on Monday to kick off a holiday-shortened week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 45.41 points, or 0.13 percent, to 33,700.28. The S&P 500 decreased 15.40 points, or 0.39 percent, to 3,949.94. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 121.55 points, or 1.09 percent, to 11,024.51.

Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with consumer staples and real estate up 0.98 percent and 0.72 percent, respectively, outpacing the rest. Consumer discretionary and energy slid 1.41 percent and 1.39 percent, respectively, leading the laggards. Tech-related stocks suffered broadly with the S&P 500 technology group finishing down 1.13 percent.

Investors are cautiously awaiting the Federal Reserve's latest meeting minutes on Wednesday to look for clues on the central bank's future rate course.

A number of Fed members have made hawkish comments recently, calling for additional actions to bring inflation down.

U.S. financial markets will be closed on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Last week, the Dow slipped about 0.01 percent, the S&P 500 decreased 0.7 percent and the Nasdaq fell 1.6 percent.
