S. Korean workers' real wage falls in Jan.-April

SEOUL, June 29 (Xinhua) -- South Korean workers' real wage, adjusted for inflation, fell for the first four months of this year due to the still high inflation, the labor ministry said Thursday.

The monthly average wage per worker among businesses with one or more regular workers totaled 4,048,000 won (3,070 U.S. dollars) in the January-April period, up 2.3 percent compared to the same period of last year, according to the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

The inflation-adjusted real wage declined 2.1 percent to 3,665,000 won (2,780 dollars) in the cited period.

Consumer prices advanced 4.5 percent for the first four months of this year from a year earlier.

The monthly average working hours for the businesses reached 156.8 hours during the January-April period, up 1.6 hours compared to the first four months of last year.

The manufacturing industry posted the longest monthly average working hours of 171.2 in the four-month period, while the construction industry logged the shortest 129.7 working hours.
