CANBERRA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Australian electric vehicle sales through the first half of 2023 have surpassed the total for 2022, a report has revealed.

The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) on Monday published its report on the state of the industry in Australia, concluding that interest in EVs has expanded significantly in the last 12 months.

According to the report, there were 46,624 EVs sold in Australia in the first six months of 2023, beating the total number sold in all of 2022.

Through to the end of June, 8.4 percent of all new vehicles sold in Australia were powered by electricity, more than double the 3.8 percent figure for 2022.

Uptake was highest in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) where 21.8 percent of new cars sold were powered by electric motors.

Despite the growing uptake, Australia still lags behind the global average on EV sales.

The report calls for the federal government to implement an ambitious vehicle efficiency standard in line with other major markets for Australia to achieve its emissions reduction targets.

"In order for Australia to achieve its climate targets, it is expected that more than 50 percent of all new cars sold in 2030 will need to be EVs. This means Australia will need to aim for around 1 million EVs on our roads by the end of 2027," it said.

"In order to achieve this, Australia needs to see a significant increase in the supply of EV models."

There are more than 90 different EVs available in the Australian market. Tesla's Model Y and Model 3, and the BYD Atto 3 account for more than 68 percent of new sales.
