TOKYO, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Japan's inflation-adjusted real wage index in June fell 1.6 percent from a year before, declining for the 15th straight month, as accelerating inflation continued to outpace salary gains, government data showed Tuesday.

Nominal wages, the average total cash earnings per worker including base and overtime pay, rose 2.3 percent to 462,040 yen (about 3,200 U.S. dollars), marking the 18th straight year-on-year increase, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

The consumer price index excluding imputed rent, used to calculate the real wage index, climbed 3.9 percent in June from a year earlier, reflecting higher prices for prepared food, detergents, mobile phones and other items.

Labor ministry officials said that the strong impact of inflation is still being felt, and they are watching to see if the trend of higher monthly pay will lead to gains in real wages.
