SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's electricity demand hit a record high last month due to a scorching heat wave, the industry ministry said Tuesday.

The maximum electricity demand reached 93.6 gigawatts (GW) on Aug. 7, surpassing the previous high of 93 GW tallied on July 7 last year, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The country's power supply came to 104.3 GW during the peak day, providing energy in a stable manner.

The record power demand was attributed to the sweltering heat wave as the monthly average temperature reached the country's sixth-highest 26.4 degrees Celsius in August.
