SEOUL, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's retail sale rose in single digits last month on the continued online demand for daily necessities, government data showed Tuesday.

The combined revenue among offline and online retailers gained 3.3 percent in August from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Revenue for online retailers expanded 8.1 percent due to the continued demand for daily necessities and the robust demand for cosmetics in summer holiday season.

Sales by offline retailers reduced 1.2 percent last month as the Chuseok holiday, a traditional autumn harvest festival in South Korea, was moved to Sept. 29 this year from Sept. 10 last year, the ministry said.

Revenue among department stores and discount outlets retreated 4.9 percent and 8.4 percent respectively in August on a yearly basis, but sales by convenience stores expanded 7.6 percent.

Offline demand for home appliances and foreign brand-name products slipped in single figures, but online demand for food and household items advanced 13.0 percent and 8.7 percent each.
