The strong monthly gains followed disruptions in port operations in British Columbia, which affected merchandise trade activity in July, the national statistical agency said.
Canada's merchandise trade balance went to a surplus of 718 million Canadian dollars (524 million U.S. dollars) in August, the first trade surplus observed since April.
According to the agency, in real, or volume, terms, exports rose 3 percent in August compared with July, while imports in real terms increased 1.2 percent.
When international trade in goods and services is combined, exports increased 4.5 percent to 79.5 billion Canadian dollars (58 billion U.S. dollars) in August, while imports rose 3.2 percent to 80.3 billion Canadian dollars (58.6 billion U.S. dollars), Statistics Canada said.
