ULAN BATOR, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia received a total of 542,123 foreign tourists by October this year, the country's Ministry of Environment and Tourism said Friday.

As of Tuesday, Mongolia earned around 700 million U.S. dollars in revenue from foreign tourists mainly from Russia, China, South Korea, Japan and Kazakhstan, said the ministry.

Mongolia has been taking measures to revive the tourism sector once hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In January, 34 more countries' citizens were granted visa-free entry to Mongolia for tourism purpose, which increased the number of visa-exempt countries to 61.

Currently, Mongolia's economy is largely dependent on its export-oriented mining sector. Developing tourism is seen as the most viable way to diversify the economy.
