According to the ministry's Import-Export Department, after a long period of rising export prices, the fall in Vietnamese rice price was simply following the trend of the global rice price.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said the ministry now placed top priorities on high-quality seed production, major export products and the formation of quality varieties with high yields, which are disease-resistant and can adapt to different climates.
According to the ministry, Vietnam's rice exports in the first six months of 2024 were a bright spot, with a volume of 4.68 million tons and turnover of 2.98 billion U.S. dollars, up 10.4 percent in volume and 32 percent in value over the same period last year.
The ministry expects Vietnam to export about 8 million tons of rice this year, earning more than 5 billion dollars.
The Philippines, Indonesia, China, Ghana, Malaysia, and Singapore are the main export markets of Vietnamese rice in the remainder of the year.
