The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 49.41 points, or 0.12 percent, to 40,539.93. The S&P 500 added 4.44 points, or 0.08 percent, to 5,463.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 12.32 points, or 0.07 percent, to 17,370.2.
Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with consumer discretionary and communication services leading the gainers by going up 1.42 percent and 0.87 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, energy and technology led the laggards by dropping 0.87 percent and 0.33 percent, respectively.
