BUCHAREST, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Spending by Romanian political parties in 2024 has far exceeded the public subsidies they have received, according to a new report published by Bucharest think tank Expert Form (EFOR) on Tuesday.

The report said political parties in the country spent 198 million lei (43.84 million U.S. dollars) in the first half of 2024, compared to the 133 million lei (29.44 million dollars) they received in public subsidies.

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the National Liberal Party (PNL) were the primary beneficiaries of these subsidies, receiving 52.1 million lei (11.53 million dollars) and 44.1 million lei (9.76 million dollars), respectively, EFOR said.

Despite the substantial public funding, the parties' expenditures were particularly high outside the official campaign period.

EFOR noted that spending during the electoral campaign itself was lower, as parties invested heavily in pre-campaign activities which are subject to less stringent regulations.

EFOR expressed concerns over the lack of transparency in how these funds were used, particularly during the pre-campaign period, when expenses are less regulated compared to the official campaign period.
