CANBERRA, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Electric vehicle (EV) sales more than doubled in Australia in 2023 to a record high, data has revealed.

According to the data, which was published by peak industry body the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) on Friday, Australians bought 87,217 battery EVs in the calendar year 2023, representing 7.2 percent of all new car sales, up from 3.2 percent, 33,410 EVs in 2022.

Sales of battery EVs, hybrids and plug-in hybrids accounted for 16.2 percent of total new vehicles sales.

Beyhad Jafari, chief executive of the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), told state media the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that the surge was encouraging.

"Australia started behind the rest of the world, but we're very quickly catching up. We hope to continue seeing sales double this year as well," he said.

"Electric vehicles are the ones doubling in sales every year. No other segment whether it's petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicles are doing that same thing."

Overall, Australians bought a record 1.21 million new vehicles in 2023, beating the previous high of 1.18 million set in 2017.

Japanese carmaker Toyota was most popular in the Australian market, accounting for 17.7 percent of sales, more than double the market share of any other manufacturer.

The Tesla Model Y was the most popular EV with 28,769 sales, ranking it sixth among all models regardless of fuel type.
