S. Korea's overseas plant orders hit 8-year high in 2023

SEOUL, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's overseas plant orders hit an eight-year high last year due to strong demand from the Middle East, government data showed Monday.

Orders for industrial plants, won by local builders from abroad, advanced 25.0 percent over the year to 30.23 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

It marked the highest amount since 2015 as orders rose sharply from the Middle East.

Plant orders from the Middle East more than tripled to 11.42 billion dollars in 2023 compared to 3.53 billion dollars in the previous year.

Orders from the Americas almost doubled to 10.14 billion dollars, but those from Asia, Africa and Europe retreated in double digits to 4.95 billion dollars, 1.85 billion dollars and 1.88 billion dollars respectively.

Overseas orders for petrochemical plants more than doubled to 8.71 billion dollars in 2023 compared to 4.05 billion dollars a year earlier.

Those for power stations and desalination plants reduced 39.6 percent to 3.01 billion dollars, but those for oil & gas facility and offshore plants increased by double figures last year.
