SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of the information and communication technology (ICT) products rose for the second consecutive month due to strong demand for locally-made semiconductors, government data showed Tuesday.

The ICT products shipment gained 8.1 percent over the year to 18.26 billion U.S. dollars in December 2023 after expanding 7.6 percent in the previous month, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Semiconductor export advanced 19.3 percent to 11.07 billion dollars last month, keeping an upward trend for the second straight month.

Display panel shipment grew 7.3 percent to 1.71 billion dollars on robust demand for OLED panels used for mobile devices, but mobile phone export shrank 1.0 percent to 940 million dollars.

Shipment for computers and peripherals dived 29.6 percent to 820 million dollars, and communications equipment export retreated 25.5 percent to 190 million dollars.

The ICT products export to the United States and Vietnam climbed in single digits, but those to the European Union (EU) and Japan declined in single figures last month.

Import for ICT products dwindled 7.2 percent over the year to 10.94 billion dollars in December, sending the trade surplus in the ICT industry to 7.32 billion dollars.

Import for mobile phones and display panels went up last month, but import for chips and computers shrank in single digits.
