TOKYO, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Japan's average unemployment rate in 2023 stood at 2.6 percent, unchanged from the previous year, government data showed Tuesday.

The rate, although lower than 2.8 percent in 2020 and 2021, was higher than the 2019 level when it hit 2.4 percent, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

Last year, the total number of jobless people fell for the second straight year to 1.78 million, while that of employed people totaled 67.47 million, up for the third consecutive year, the data showed.

In December alone, unemployment rate stood at 2.4 percent, down from 2.5 percent a month earlier.

Among industries cutting job offers last month, the manufacturing sector saw the sharpest drop of 10.5 percent from a year earlier, followed by 8.4 percent in the lifestyle and entertainment services sector, the data showed.

According to separate data release on Tuesday, the labor ministry said the ratio of effective job openings to jobseekers last year stood at 1.31, indicating 131 job openings for every 100 jobseekers.

The ratio, up 0.03 points from the previous year, saw the second year of improvement, amid higher demand in the hospitality sector, although the job-to-applicant ratio was below the pre-pandemic level of 1.60 in 2019, according to the ministry.

In December, the job availability ratio edged down 0.01 point from November to 1.27 in December, meaning there were 127 jobs available for every 100 jobseekers, the data showed.
