Vietnam records 1.5 mln int'l arrivals in January

HANOI, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam recorded more than 1.5 million international arrivals in the first month of 2024, a surge of 10.3 percent compared to the previous month and 73.6 percent over the same period last year, according to the General Statistics Office.

Most of the arrivals (1.3 million) were via air routes, accounting for 85 percent of the total, followed by road (176,900) and sea (48,400).

The majority of visitors in January came from Asia with over 1.1 million, visitors from Europe reached over 216,000, and those from the Americas reached over 97,000, followed by Oceania and Africa.

South Korea remains Vietnam's largest source market with 417,576 visitors.

China, which used to be the biggest source of foreign arrivals to Vietnam in pre-pandemic era, is the second-largest source market for visitors in January with 242,181 visitors, up 103.4 percent from the previous month and a staggering 1,525.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

January witnessed a remarkable growth in the Australian market as it rose to the fifth position with 62,100 visitors, more than 1.5 times the previous month (37,040 visitors).

Vietnam has set the target of receiving 17-18 million international arrivals and 110 million domestic arrivals in 2024 with total tourism revenue of about 840 trillion dong (34.3 billion U.S. dollars).
