Laos records 188 mln USD in trade deficit in January

VIENTIANE, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Laos recorded a trade deficit of 188 million U.S. dollars in January, according to the latest figures from the Lao Trade Portal website.

The total value of trade in January amounted to over 1.3 billion dollars, of which 561 million U.S. dollars were for exports and 749 million dollars for imports, said a report issued on Monday on the website.

Laos' main export products included cassava, gold ore, mixed gold and gold bar, paper products, cassava starch, rubber, sugar, iron ore, wood pulp and paper scraps, and banana.

The country's main imports included fuel, chemical products, mechanical equipment, land vehicles, electrical appliances, steel and magnetic steel, wood and wood products, beverage, sugar, and vehicle spare parts.

China, Thailand and Vietnam are among the leading export destinations for Lao products. Meanwhile, the major import sources to Laos included Thailand, China and Vietnam, according to the report.
