S. Korea's ICT export rises for 6th month in April

SEOUL, May 15 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of the information and communication technology (ICT) products rose for the sixth successive month due to strong global demand for locally-made tech products, government data showed Wednesday.

The ICT products shipment jumped 33.8 percent from a year earlier to 17.08 billion U.S. dollars in April, continuing to grow since November last year, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Semiconductor export soared 53.9 percent to 9.96 billion dollars last month, keeping a double-digit expansion for the sixth consecutive month.

Display panel shipment advanced 15.2 percent to 1.64 billion dollars on solid demand for panels used for TVs and computers, while mobile phone export gained 15.3 percent to 930 million dollars.

Shipment for computers and peripherals surged 55.9 percent to 910 million dollars, but communications equipment export reduced 3.5 percent to 190 million dollars.

Import for ICT products increased 10.4 percent from a year earlier to 11.56 billion dollars in April, sending the trade surplus in the ICT industry to 5.52 billion dollars.

Import for chips, display panels, mobile phones and computers all went up in double digits last month.
