ULAN BATOR, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia's foreign debt increased by 4.8 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the country's National Statistics Office on Thursday.

The data showed that the Asian country's foreign debt amounted to 35.0 billion U.S. dollars at the end of March.

Of the total foreign debt, the government's debt stood at 8.0 billion dollars and the central bank's debt was 1.8 billion dollars, the data indicated.

The increase in foreign debt was mostly attributed to a rise in direct investment and intercompany loans, according to the statistical agency.
