The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 31.08 points, or 0.08 percent, to 39,344.79. The S&P 500 added 5.66 points, or 0.10 percent, to 5,572.85. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 50.98 points, or 0.28 percent, to 18,403.74.
Six of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with communication services and energy leading the laggards by losing 1.01 percent and 0.59 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, technology and materials led the gainers by rising 0.72 percent and 0.28 percent, respectively.
