U.S. electric car maker Tesla announced it lifted the price of Tesla Model S electric car from between 685,000 yuan and 953,000 yuan to between 718,800 yuan and one million yuan on Wednesday.

The company attributes the around five percent rise in price to the recent RMB depreciation, the Beijing Daily reported. Tesla sold only about 2,500 electric cars in China last year, far less than the target of 10,000 units.

In the first half of this year, the high-profile electric car maker sold 2,147 cars, accounting for about ten percent of its global sales. The company's vice president of communications Ricardo Reyes said previously Tesla's sales in August grew 45 percent month on month.
