SEOUL, July 23 (Xinhua) -- SK Hynix, South Korea's memory chip giant, posted an earnings surprise in the second quarter as the COVID-19 outbreak raised demand for memory chips used for servers and PCs, the regulatory filing showed Thursday.

Consolidated operating profit reached 1.95 trillion won (1.6 billion U.S. dollars) in the April-June quarter, more than tripling compared with the same quarter of last year. It beat marketing expectations of about 1.8 trillion won (1.5 billion U.S. dollars).

Revenue advanced 33.4 percent over the year to 8.6 trillion won (7.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the second quarter, and net income more than doubled to 1.26 trillion won (1.1 billion U.S. dollars) in the quarter.

The better-than-expected earnings came as the COVID-19 pandemic led people to work at home and attend online classes, boosting demand for memory chips used for servers and PCs.

DRAM memory chip shipment grew 2 percent in the second quarter from the previous quarter, while its average selling price (ASP) advanced 15 percent in the quarter.

Shipment for NAND flash memory chip expanded 5 percent in the June quarter on a quarterly basis, while its ASP gained 8 percent.
