The 5th Business of IP Asia Forum was opened in Hong Kong on Dec. 3. The importance of intellectual property is well acknowledged by the guests and participants. It is agreed that a sound intellectual property system is the cornerstone of innovation, and a powerful force behind social and economic development.

In his address, C.Y. Leung, Chief Executive of HKSAR, claimed that innovation and creativity are motivated by intellectual property, and a successful business is derived from it as well. In Asia, Hong Kong is the center of innovation and intellectual property. Under the mature intellectual property supervisory system, the rights of both citizen and overseas intellectual property owners can be well protected. Leung also said that mainland China, as the second largest economic entity in the world, is the major creator and user of intellectual property. Taking advantages of its superiority, Hong Kong can make mainland China and the rest of the world connected in terms of the protection of intellectual property, which will also benefit Hong Kong in return. In addition, Leung stated that the amendment of the Copyright Law has already entered into the last process.

Shen Changyu, Commissioner of State Intellectual Property Office of China, pointed out that Hong Kong is trying to position itself as a crucial platform for intellectual property trading in Asia. He is looking forward that Hong Kong can play an increasingly important role in the area of intellectual property, and strengthen the communication and cooperation with China in related fields.

This forum themed with “IP: Transforming Global Business” is jointly held by HKSAR government, HKTDC and HK Design Center. It is expected to attract more than 80 prominent speakers and 2,000 IP professionals. During the forum, IP manager training program is available for SME to train talents and enhance their competitiveness. This forum will be closed on Dec. 4.
