Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region plans to spend 3.19 billion yuan (451.2 million U.S. dollars) on the construction of 10 airports this year as part of its efforts to improve connectivity and transform itself into a transportation hub along the Belt and Road, the Xinjiang Airport Group said Thursday.

The projects involve the continued construction of five airports located in Kashgar, Aksu, Yining, Yutian and Zhaosu, and the construction of five new airports in Turpan, Taxkorgan, Qitai, Bayanbulak and Barkol, according to the group.

The group said it is accelerating the resumption of work and construction projects as the coronavirus outbreak wanes. Among the continued construction projects, two new terminals of the Yining and Aksu airports will be put into operation in July and August, respectively.

Meanwhile, two new projects of the Taxkorgan and Turpan airports are expected to start at the end of April and June, respectively, with construction on the remaining three new airports beginning in late October.
