South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is expected to produce around 5.8 million metric tons (tonnes) of sugar in the crop year of 2015-16. Nong Guang, chairman of the sugar association in South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, noted that the continuous decreases in sugar price have discouraged the farmers.
According to statistics, the planting area of sugarcane in Guangxi stood at 12 million mu (or 1 million hectare) in the 2015/16 crushing season, a drop of 1.5 million mu (100,000 ha.) from the previous crop year.
