SEOUL, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- South Koreans' online shopping hit a record quarterly high in the third quarter on strong demand for purchase using smartphone apps, statistical office data showed Monday.

Shopping in the cyberspace reached a new high of 33.56 trillion won (28.9 billion U.S. dollars) in the July-September quarter, up 19.4 percent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.

The mobile shopping jumped 25.5 percent over the year to 21.69 trillion won (18.7 billion U.S. dollars) in the quarter.

The purchase using smartphone apps accounted for 64.6 percent of the total online shopping, marking the biggest portion since the relevant data began to be compiled in 2013.

The double-digit increase in the mobile shopping was attributed to strong demand for food delivery services using smartphone apps.

Online shopping increased in double figures for consumer electronics and cosmetic products.

In September, the online shopping expanded 22.3 percent to 11.18 trillion won (9.6 billion U.S. dollars) compared with a year earlier.

The mobile shopping jumped 29.2 percent to 7.23 trillion won (6.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the month.
