Chinese macro economic planner the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is studying on market-oriented pricing reform of natural gas, said Li Pumin, secretary general of the NDRC on Thursday. "We would prompt liberalization of relevant price control based on market development and reform plan would be released once it is seen mature," said Li at a special press conference.

Now, there is only moderate competition but not adequate one in natural gas sector, added Li. It's not possible to announce single-minded pricing reform without considering restraints from systems and mechanisms. The pricing of as much as 40 percent natural gas has been liberalized and Shanghai Petroleum and Natural Gas Exchange (SHPGX) has been in trial operation since July 1, 2015 to prompt oil and gas reform and enhance China's gas pricing power.
