China UnionPay has become the world's largest chip card network operator with 1.446 billion UnionPay-branded chip bank cards issued cumulatively by the end of March, according to a statement published on UnionPay's website.
In the first three months of this year alone, UnionPay issued a total of 220 million chip cards. The number of point-of-sale terminals that accept QuickPass, UnionPay's chip card-based contactless payment services, has exceeded 5.7 million, the statement said. The company said 2015 would be an important year for an explosion of chip cards in China.
