China Focus: steel export peaks in September

In September 2015, China's steel export refreshed a monthly record high while the average export price hit the lowest within 2015. Analysis results show low added-value steel had a higher proportion than the same period of 2014 during January-September. -- Steel export hits monthly record high in September China exported 11.263 million tonnes of steel in September, growing 15.5 percent from August and 32.1 percent from a year earlier to hit the highest monthly record in history, data from China Customs showed.

In January-September, China exported 83.282 million tonnes of steel, up 27.2 percent year on year. October saw the steel export slump nearly 20 percent from that in September, the latest data from China Customs showed. In September, China imported 1.017 million tonnes of steel, down 1.2 percent from August and down 25.8 percent from a year ago.

In January-September, it imported 9.781 million tonnes, down 11.6 percent on year. The average steel export price was 507 US dollars/tonne in September, falling 23 US dollars/tonne on month to hit the lowest record within 2015. In the meantime, average import price was 1,078 US dollars, down 16 US dollars/tonne from August.

The gap between import and export surged to a historical high of 571 US dollars/tonne in September. In September, China saw a net steel export of 10.246 million tonnes and a net steel billet and ingot import of some 50,000 tonnes, which were converted into a net crude steel export of 10.85 million tonnes, up 43.1 percent on year. In January-September, the foreign trade of steel was converted into a net crude steel export of 77.94 million tonnes, up 35.4 percent on year.

-- Steel bar and wire rod export accounts for 38 pct in Jan.-Sept. In January-September, steel bar and wire rod export grew 58.3 percent on a year-on-year basis to account for 38.1 percent of China's overall steel export during the period. Steel plate export, with a like-for-like growth of 16.6 percent, accounted for 43.7 percent of total export. In September, the average export price of steel bar and wire rod was 345 US dollars/tonne, compared to the import price of 1,261 US dollars/tonne. Average export price of steel plate was 915 US dollars/tonne, 346 US dollars/tonne lower than the import price. In a breakdown, the export of extremely thick plate grew 1,310 percent on year during January-September, much more than any other steel product. The steel bar export came second with an 89 percent growth. Railway steel grew 56.2 percent, ranking the fourth.

-- Steel export to Southeast Asia surges sharply In January-September, steel exports to seven countries of Southeast Asia, namely Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia, totaled 25.369 million tonnes, up 50.9 percent year on year, which took up about 30.5 percent of the total export in the first nine months of this year.

Meanwhile, export to the Republic of Korea was 10.184 million tonnes, 12.2 percent of total; export to nine major countries of the Middle East took up 9.6 percent, with a year-on-year growth of 35.7 percent; export to seven major countries of the European Union contributed 6.7 percent, with a like-for-like growth of 45.9 percent; export to six major countries of South America accounted for 5.1 percent; export to 10 major countries of Africa contributed 4.3 percent, with a like-for-like growth of 44.3 percent; export to India accounted for 3.9 percent, with a year-on-year surge of 41.3 percent. September saw Chinese steel exports to the seven countries of Southeast Asia, seven countries of the European Union, nine countries of the Middle East, the Republic of Korea and India all hit the highest record since the beginning of this year, while the export to African 10 countries declined 12.8 percent on month but still stayed at a historical high level.
