SEOUL, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of the information and communications technology (ICT) products rose last month on demand for semiconductors and mobile phones, a government report showed Thursday.

The ICT export grew 3.3 percent from a year earlier to 14.99 billion U.S. dollars in July, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Import in the ICT industry added 1.2 percent to 9.86 billion dollars, sending the trade surplus to 5.13 billion dollars.

Global demand for locally-made chips and mobile phones increased 5.2 percent and 9.5 percent each last month.

Export for computers and peripherals jumped 69.4 percent in July, keeping a fast growth as the COVID-19 pandemic encouraged people to work at home and attend online classes.

Display panel shipment declined in double figures on weaker demand for OLED panels.

The ICT export to China, South Korea's biggest trading partner, amounted to 6.97 billion dollars, followed by Vietnam with shipment of 2.49 billion dollars, the United States with 1.81 billion dollars and the European Union with 940 million dollars respectively.
