NANJING, April 16 (Xinhua) -- East China's Jiangsu Province will build more charging points for new energy vehicles (NEVs) in villages and townships as the country speeds up infrastructure construction to support the development of electric cars.

According to a plan released Tuesday by State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd., it will invest about 370 million yuan (about 52.4 million U.S. dollars) in building charging facilities in 2020.

Jiangsu now has about 170,000 electric cars and 78,000 chargers of various types across the province. Around 90 percent of the chargers are in the urban areas, but an increasing number of rural residents are using electric cars, the company said.

As the province takes the lead to build more charging facilities, it will also help stimulate investment in electric vehicles and chargers and spur consumption amid the COVID-19 epidemic, said Li Yaohong, the company's marketing director.

The State Grid Corporation of China announced Tuesday that it would invest 2.7 billion yuan this year to build 78,000 chargers.

By the end of March, China had 542,000 public charging points, industry data showed.
