Tokyo stocks rose 0.25 percent on Friday as investors were reluctant to chase the upside aggressively ahead of a three-day weekend and earnings reports starting next week.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 50.80 points, from Thursday at 20,650.92. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 2.11 points, or 0.13 percent, higher at 1,662.94. Gainers were led by insurance, shipping and banking issues.
The turnover was 2,044.92 billion yen (about 16.48 billion U.S. dollars).
