Tokyo stocks dropped 0.36 percent in the morning session of Monday as investor sentiment was dented by U.S. labor market data out before the weekend.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 64.26 points, from Friday to 17,727.90.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 9.14 points, or 0.63 percent, to 1,435.39. Decliners were led by food, real estate and insurance issues.
