Tokyo stocks open sharply higher in early trading on Wall St. gains,

Tokyo stocks rose sharply in early trading Wednesday, with the Nikkei index gaining more than 600 points following overnight gains on Wall Street and Shanghai stocks Tuesday.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 619.29 points, or 3.55 percent, from Tuesday to 18,046.37.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange soared 48.79 points, or 3.44 percent, to 1,465.50.

Every industry category on the main section gained ground, with gainers led by pharmaceuticals, oil and coal products and rubber products.
