Tokyo stocks rose 1.64 percent Friday as investor sentiment was boosted by expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep U.S. interest rates low for the time being as well as by gains in global stock markets overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 297.50 points, from Thursday at 18,438.67, a one-month closing high.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 33.73 points, or 2.28 percent, higher at 1,515.13.

Gainers were led by iron and steel, nonferrous metals and construction issues. The turnover was 2,971.28 billion yen (about 24.77 billion U.S. dollars).
