Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday as the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar inhibited early buying although a solid performance on Wall Street overnight provided support.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 4.72 points, or 0.03 percent, from Tuesday to 16,670.73.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 0.37 point, or 0.03 percent, to 1,340.40.

Early decliners comprised metal products, iron and steel and nonferrous metal-linked stocks.
