Tokyo stocks opened lower on Tuesday as global market volatility following Britain opting to leave the European Union continued to batter sentiment, with a strong yen sending exporters lower.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 188. 22 points, or 1.23 percent, from Monday to 15,120.99. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 17.23 points, or 1.41 percent, to 1,208.53.

The majority of industry categories on the main section retreated into negative territory, with rubber products, insurance and securities issues leading early notable decliners.
