Tokyo shares opened higher early Thursday due to the weakness of the yen against the U.S. dollar.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 54.74 points, or 0.34 percent, from Wednesday to 16,120.46.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 2.85 points, or 0.22 percent, at 1,287. 46.
Gainers were led by iron and steel, land transportation and transportation equipment issues.
