Tokyo shares opened higher Wednesday, with the Nikkei index up over 2 percent for a moment, on strong U. S. stocks overnight and a weaker yen. As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 261.16 points, or 1.62 percent, from Tuesday to 16,356.81.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 22.02 points, or 1.71 percent, to 1, 307.75.
Every industry category on the main section except miscellaneous product and food issues gained ground. Notable gainers included insurance, mining and security issues.
