Tokyo shares opened lower Tuesday with market sentiment hurt by weak U.S. stocks overnight.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 161.90 points, or 0.97 percent, from Monday to 16,473.87.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 11.75 points, or 0.89 percent, to 1, 310.08. Decliners were led by insurance, metal and mining shares.
