Tokyo shares opened lower Wednesday on the yen's rise following the weaker-than-expected U.S. services sector data for August.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 144.37 points, or 0.85 percent, from Tuesday to 16,937.61. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 10.58 points, or 0.78 percent, to 1, 342.00.
Decliners were led by insurance, iron and steel, and rubber product issues.
