Tokyo stocks lost ground Wednesday morning, mirroring losses on Wall Street overnight, with a downturn for prices of crude oil and a firm yen also contributing to a dour market mood.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 98.44 points, or 0.58 percent, from Tuesday to 16,926.32.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 6.13 points, or 0.45 percent, to 1,350.22.
Notable decliners by the morning break were comprised of iron and steel, banking and nonferrous metal-linked stocks.
