Nikkei closes lower on gains lock-in, stronger yen

Tokyo shares closed mixed Thursday, with the Nikkei stock index ending lower on investors' gains lock-in as well as the stronger yen.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 73.47 points, or 0.37 percent, from Wednesday at 19,520.69.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 1.20 points, or 0.08 percent, higher at 1,555.68.

Decliners were led by mining, iron and steel, and metal product issues. The day's turnover was around 2,435.9 billion yen (20.93 billion U.S. dollars).
