Nikkei ends slightly lower on rising yen

The Nikkei stock index ended slightly lower Monday on the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar as well as market players selling to cash in gains from the past week.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 24.33 points, or 0.13 percent, from Friday at 18,356.89.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 5.05 points, or 0.34 percent, higher at 1,469.58, rising for the 12th consecutive trading day.

Gainers were led by electric power and gas, and bank issues while decliners were led by mining and precision instrument issues.

The day's turnover was around 2,354.6 billion yen (21.05 billion U.S. dollars).
