Tokyo shares opened lower on Friday as the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar and U.S. shares losses dampened investor sentiment.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 129.15 points, or 0.66 percent, from Thursday to 19,391.54.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange slid 10.47 points, or 0.67 percent, to 1,545.21.

Decliners were led by insurance, securities, and iron and steel issues.
