Tokyo shares opened lower Friday on weak U.S. stocks overnight, with the Nikkei index briefly falling below the 19,000 line for the first time in three weeks.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 116.78 points, or 0.61 percent, from Thursday to 19,028.36.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 8.41 points, or 0.55 percent, to 1,509.98.

Decliners were led by marine transportation, nonferrous metal, and iron and steel issues.
