Tokyo stocks opened lower Thursday as a drop in oil prices overnight coupled with a comparatively firm yen against the U.S. dollar saw investors in a risk-off mood.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 30.83 points, or 0.16 percent, from Wednesday to 19,349.04.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, retreated 2.66 points, or 0.17 percent, at 1,554.43.

Early notable decliners comprised bank, nonferrous metal, and oil and coal product-linked stocks.
