Tokyo shares opened lower early Tuesday on retreating U.S. stocks over lower oil prices.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 55.19 points, or 0.28 percent, from Friday to 19,399.14.
Tokyo markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 3.02 points, or 0.19 percent, at 1,550.30.
Decliners were led by glass and ceramics product, mining and marine transportation issues.
