Tokyo stocks opened fractionally lower Tuesday as investors hit the sidelines ahead of major events this week including a U.S. Federal Open Market Committee meeting.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 6.50 points, or 0.03 percent, from Monday to 19,627.25.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged 1.47 points, or 0.09 percent lower, to 1,575.93.
Issues that notably advanced from the morning bell comprised mining, oil and coal product issues.
Those that retreated were led buy rubber product, and iron and steel-linked stocks.
