Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as a comparatively firm yen against the U.S. dollar dented market sentiment.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 104.94 points, or 0.53 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 19,814.88.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 8.41 points, or 0.53 percent, to finish at 1,575.82.
Oil and coal product, marine transportation and insurance-linked issues comprised those that declined the most during the day, and declining issues outpaced advancing ones by 1,287 to 630 on the First Section.
Trading volume on the main section on Wednesday came to 1,964.47 million shares, dropping from Tuesday's volume of 2,174.25 million shares.
The turnover on the third trading day of the week came to 2,492.7 billion yen (22.18 billion U.S. dollars).
